Lighting tech gets over £1 million comp for lost leg- 05/02/2008[top]
A lighting technician who lost a leg in a car crash has been awarded over £1 million compensation
Gary Leesmith, a 29-year-old from North Woolton, Tynedale, had an ambition to make it to the top of his profession.
He was awarded £600,000 in damages, as well as a previously agreed £1.15 million for pain and suffering.
Mr Leesmith had his leg amputated after the crash in which he collided into an oncoming car as he travelled near Leatherhead in Surrey on a motorcycle.
Having originally claimed £2.7 million, judge Mr Justice Cooke told Mr Leesmith that his request was unrealistic.
Mr Justice Cooke said: "I regard the prospects of him ever becoming a lighting designer, let alone a high-flying Woodroffe-type figure, as so remote as to be speculative.
"I do not find that there is substantial or significant chance of him ever reaching such heights and so consider it no further."
