HSE to carry out migrant worker checks- 30/06/2008[top]
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is launching a crackdown on employment agencies who might be putting migrant workers at risk of workplace accidents through a lack of training.
Spot checks will be conducted on Cambridgeshire employment agencies between now and the end of July.
Warning of the visits will be given to the agencies involved as HSE inspectors and environmental health officers will initially ask them about their health and safety policies regarding migrant workers.
An effort will also be made to ascertain the type of premises in which such workers are placed.
David Head, principal HSE inspector for Cambridgeshire, said: "We are concerned that migrant workers are being put at risk due to a variety of reasons, including lack of understanding of safety information and lack of instruction.
"Where our visits identify problems, inspectors may revisit the agencies to resolve these issues and will take enforcement action if necessary."
Accidents at work caused by negligent health and safety practices can prove costly for careless employers.
