BSC launches new health and safety course- 23/04/2008[top]

The British Safety Council (BSC) will launch a health and safety course to be taken by up to 500,000 schoolchildren, teaching ways of identifying workplace hazards in preparation for summer jobs or work placements.

After conducting a survey involving 250 companies and 1,000 employees, the group expressed concern over attitudes towards health and safety and decided on the necessity to deliver a "clear and urgent" message.

The BSC says over 1,260 schools have already registered to run the course and 70,000 youngsters are expected to take the qualification in the first academic year.

BSC chief executive Brian Nimick commented: "Recognition by policy makers, enforcers and the insurance industry of their responsibilities to support rather than hamper business is a crucial step towards changing the public perception of 'silly safety' measures to one of 'sensible safety' practice which reduces ill health and saves lives in the workplace."

According to BSC figures, 62 per cent of employers believe there is real benefit to young people in being taught about work safety at school.
