What is Industrial Deafness?

Industrial Deafness also known as Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is a condition associated with prolonged exposure to excessive noise in the workplace. If your employers knew of the potential danger and did nothing to safeguard you, you deserve to be compensated.

Many people have been affected by NIHL, typically because they've worked in certain industries and with certain tools, some of which include:

What are the symptoms?

Important Note: hearing loss often happens gradually and can sometimes only affect your perception of certain types of sounds. As a consequence of this, some people don't realise they have a problem. Typical signs are other people pointing out that the TV or radio is too loud or that you are struggling to join in conversations.

Noise is a part of everyday life but you are at increased risk of permanent damage to your hearing if you are familiar with the following work scenarios:

  • where you work the noise is intrusive for the majority of the working day
  • you work with noisy machinery and/or power tools in excess of 30 minutes a day (see above table)
  • you work in a noisy industry (see above table)
  • you experience muffled hearing at the end of the day, although it is better by the morning
