HSE targets self-employed farmers in south-east- 08/02/2008[top]
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is staging a free event as part of a campaign to reduce the number of farm workers killed and injured each year.
Self-employed farmers in Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk are being invited to Otley Agricultural College in Suffolk on Thursday, February 14th for an agricultural awareness safety day.
Figures show that there were 415 major injuries in the agriculture sector from 2001 to 2002 up to 2006 to 2007, placing it among the most hazardous industries to work in.
HSE Inspector Malcolm Crowther for the East said: "Whereas the number of fatal accidents to agricultural employees is decreasing, the figure for the self-employed is going up.
"Any farmer receiving an invitation to this event should treat it as a welcome opportunity to improve health and safety in their business and make every effort to attend."
Different scenarios will be run through at the event, providing attendees with practical demonstrations on how to eliminate risks.
