Company fined after workers injured by machinery- 04/07/2008[top]

Rehau, a plastics extrusion firm, has been convicted of health and safety breaches after two employees were hurt by inadequately guarded machinery.

Holyhead Magistrates Court fined the Hereford company £7,500 and ordered it to pay £3340 in costs as a result of the separate February and March 2006 incidents.

Geraint Jones and Susan Jones, both of Amlwch, suffered injuries to their hands while feeding plastic into different machines at the firm's Anglesey plant.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive found that one of the machines had no physical guarding at all while the other was being used without necessary safety devices.

Speaking after the case, senior HSE inspector David Wynne urged companies to ensure that workers are protected from dangerous machinery.

He said: "Safety guards and devices on machines are put there for a very good reason - the safety of the machine operators - and they need to be appropriate for the risk."
