HSE warns of forklift truck danger- 06/02/2008[top]

The Health and Safety Executive has warned employers over the inappropriate use of forklift trucks.

A Carlisle joinery company was recently prosecuted after an employee was lifted up on a forklift truck to a height of eight feet to fit a company sign.

Dick Thompson and Co (Cumbria) Ltd were handed a £2,000 fine and costs of over £800.

HSE inspector Mhairi Duffy was visiting the premises of the company when she saw worker Ryan Jewett being lifted on the pallet of a fork-lift.

Ms Duffy, said: "Accidents involving fork lift trucks account for a large proportion of accidents in the workplace and it is an employer's responsibility to ensure that drivers are properly trained and use the equipment properly."

"Working at heights should never be carried out from the fork arms or from a pallet balanced on the fork arms of a lift truck."
