Injuries result in fine for employer- 30/06/2008[top]
An employer from north Wales has been fined £7,500 after a failure in safety standards resulted in two serious injuries to members of staff.
Failures by Rehau Ltd to ensure that its machinery was properly guarded resulted in Geraint Jones and Susan Jones, both of Amlwch, suffering severe hand injuries after they were drawn into a machine that they were feeding plastic into.
The prosecution by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) heard that Mr Jones received hand lacerations while Ms Jones received lacerations and fractures to both hands.
Commenting on the case, HSE Inspector David Wynne said: "Our investigation showed that one machine did not have any physical guarding and the other machine was being operated without adequate safety devices."
Rehau Ltd, of Hill Court, Walford, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire pleaded guilty to two separate offences under Regulation 11 (1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.
The HSE today (June 30th) warned of impending spot checks focusing on the employment of migrant workers, after fears have been raised that they are being put at risk due to inadequate training.
